VTR-48 - Procedure for New Residents to Get a Tennessee License Plate

Vehicle owners that move to Tennessee from a different state must obtain a Tennessee title and registration for their vehicle.  New residents should submit an application for title and registration to their local county clerk’s office

The following documentation must accompany an application for title and registration:

  • Proof of identification and proof of residency, outlined here;
  • Most current out-of-state registration; and
  • The current out-of-state title to the vehicle, or the name and address of the lienholder for the vehicle for purposes of requesting the current title.

More information: Information about the types of license plates available in Tennessee can be found here.
