VT-1 - Documents Needed to Title a Vehicle (Current Resident)

A current Tennessee resident can obtain a title for a new or used vehicle from their county clerk’s office. The resident will need to submit to their local county clerk, or the county clerk where the dealer is located, the following documents:

For new vehicle titles:

  • Proof of identification and proof of residency, described here;
  • Manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO);
  • The new vehicle's invoice; and
  • A copy of the current registration, if transferring your license plate.

For used vehicle titles:

  • Proof of identification and proof of residency, described here;
  • A valid certificate of title properly assigned;
  • An odometer disclosure statement, if applicable; and
  • A copy of the current registration if transferring your license plate.

For gift, low selling, or lineal relative vehicle transfers the Affidavit of Non-dealer Transfers of Motor Vehicles and Boats is needed.
