Generally, you cannot receive a refund for the pro-rated or unused portion of your vehicle registration. When you renew your registration, the county clerk issues you a tag. Once that tag is put into use on the first day of the new registration period, the tag is no longer refundable.
On limited occasions you may be eligible for a refund, but only if your old tags have not yet expired and you wish to return your newly purchased tags. However, the Department of Revenue only issues refunds for the state portion of your vehicle registration. If your refund is approved by the Department, you may then contact the county clerk to request a refund for the county/local portion of the registration fees.
