GI-9 - Notification to Heirs of Liens (Garagekeeper, Tow, Storage)

Individuals that inherit a vehicle from a deceased person should be aware that until the vehicle is titled and registered in their name, garagekeepers, towing firms, and other entities that may come into possession of the vehicle will not be aware that ownership of the vehicle has changed. When a garagekeeper or similar entity submits a vehicle information request form for "all known interested parties,” the Department provides information for the registered owner(s), lienholder, and/or lessor. This would not include heirs unless the vehicle has been retitled. For this reason, individuals that inherit a vehicle should take steps to obtain and title and registration for the vehicle in their name as soon as possible.
