Vehicle owners that move to Tennessee from a different state must obtain a Tennessee title and registration for their vehicle. New residents should submit an application for title and registration to their local county clerk’s office, after completing emissions testing if it is required by their county of residence. As of January, 2022, Davidson County is the only county that requires emissions testing.
The following documentation must accompany an application for title and registration:
- Proof of identification and proof of residency, outlined here;
- Passed emissions testing certificate (if applicable);
- Most current out-of-state registration; and
- The current out-of-state title to the vehicle, or the name and address of the lienholder for the vehicle for purposes of requesting the current title.
