Why was I issued a new account number when I applied for the FONCE exemption?

When a taxpayer is registered for franchise and excise tax, an account number is issued.  This account number is to be used for any tax year in which the taxpayer does not meet the exemption requirements and must file a franchise and excise tax return (FAE 170).  When a taxpayer files an application for exemption, an exempt account is registered and a second account number is issued.

This second account number should be used for any tax year in which the taxpayer meets the exemption requirements and must file an annual exemption renewal (FAE 183).  The taxpayer must file either a franchise and excise tax return or an annual exemption renewal for each tax year and indicate the appropriate account number on the form.
