Is my individual tax information subject to the public records laws, or is it kept confidential?

A taxpayer’s own tax returns and tax information are not public records. They are not available to other parties through a public records request, unless an exception to the confidentiality laws applies. A taxpayer may request copies of his or her own previously submitted tax returns by submitting a written request to:

Attn: Records Custodian
Tennessee Department of Revenue
Andrew Jackson Building
500 Deaderick Street
Nashville, Tennessee 37242

A taxpayer may also deliver a request in person at any of our offices. All records requests must be made in writing. (See Tenn. Code Ann. § 10-7-503(a)).
